A Supernatural Weapon

It was midnight, Paul and Silas were bound by their feet and sitting in jail. They were in jail because they cast a demon of divination out of a slave girl. Her master was angry because he lost profit from the loss of the slave girl’s ability to fortune-tell. So Paul and Silas were, thrown into the inner jail cell. Guess what they were doing. They were not moping around. They were in WORSHIP. They were seeking God. In Acts 16:25, it states “But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. In the middle of your situation, your struggle, you worship.

Worship is a form of incense that gets released into the heavenly spaces that are described all throughout the Bible. It is a sweet aroma to God, that is pleasing to him. Worship is also a weapon that is used against all spiritual attacks against us. Worship breaks all demonic ties. Worship is powerful. Worship will shake the walls of Hell.

Worship will also strip us back, so we lay bare in the presence of God. In Hebrew, the most common word to describe worship is Shachah. It means to depress, to bow down, to fall down. It means to humble yourself and lay down your pride and your human nature. In the case of Paul and Silas, even though they were stuck in a predicament, they humbled themselves in that jail cell. They sang hymns and prayed to the only one who could get them out of the dilemma they found themselves in. When they did that, God rescued them. The Bible talks about how a violent earthquake came and shook the foundations of the jail cell. The door to the jail cell swung wide open and the chains on their feet loosened. That is the result of the supernatural power of worship. It is the key to open prison doors and sets the prisoners free.

That is what worship does, it humbles you and changes you, but at the same time the situation around you will also change, sometimes immediately but sometimes it will in the perfect timing of God.
